The day that your Bin There Dump That franchise opens for business will likely be one of the best days — career-wise — of your life. But what will your days be like from that point on?
To find out, we asked Patrick Daley, owner of Bin There Dump That Sarasota, to give us a glimpse into a day in the life of a Bin There Dump That franchise operator.
Waking Up. Checking In.
The first thing Patrick does when he wakes up in the morning — after getting his two children off to school — is call his drivers. While much of the scheduling is automated, Patrick feels that this personal conversation is important to ensure everything — and everyone — is on the same page.
“I make sure they are coming in, and I make sure they know what they’re doing that day and where they are going,” he said.
Hitting The Books
After conversing with his drivers, it’s time to crunch some numbers. Patrick goes through paperwork from the day before, reviewing and reconciling bills and invoices.
This is a critical function of any small business, and it is essential to hitting sales targets and remaining financially successful.
Even if you are not a professional accountant, there are some great accounting tools for small businesses available that make it easy to balance your books. Plus, as a Bin There Dump That franchise, you receive free QuickBooks software along with pre-populated templates to make the process simple and straightforward.
A Fork In The Road … Depending Upon Workload
At this point in the day, usually around 10:30 a.m., Patrick will take on one of two roles — driver or sales executive.
Patrick has two trucks, one full-time driver and one part-time driver. If the volume of orders is high, or if one of his drivers is unavailable, then he will take the wheel and make deliveries himself.
Otherwise, he will focus on sales and business development tasks, which include:
- Making phone calls to contractors in the area in order to strengthen existing relationships or build new ones.
- Reviewing lists of potential leads and targets to grow his customer base.
- Managing the franchise’s social media and online pages.
- Checking out company reviews on Angie’s List.
Networking At Night
Networking can play a critical role in the success of a small business or franchise. That’s why, several times a month, Patrick attends networking events with local business groups, chambers of commerce and other organizations. These largely take place in the evening, but some events are held earlier in the day.
Getting Ready For Another Day
Patrick winds down every day by gearing up for the next one. At night, he reviews voicemails and email messages, takes stock of inventory and makes sure the schedule is set for the day ahead.
How To Make Working From Home Work
One of the biggest hurdles, and expenses, of starting a new business is finding and paying for office space. That’s why we give our franchisees the option of working from home when they first start their operations. This affords them tremendous flexibility, in terms of both time and finances.
However, working from home is not without its challenges, as it is easy to become distracted, and hard to separate “home life” from “work life.” That’s why Patrick recommends creating a separate and distinct space.
“You need to learn to separate yourself from home even though you’re at home,” he said. “Having a separate space is really important.”
If you are thinking about running a business from home, here are eight proven productivity tips you should consider.
No Two Days Are The Same
One of the greatest things about being a franchisee is the flexibility to set your own priorities and your own schedule. As a result, each day can vary, which makes work a lot more exciting and a lot less monotonous.
